Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect during my first massage therapy visit?

You will be required to fill out a Health History Form. Once you have completed your forms I will review them and will begin by asking you general questions to establish what areas you would like worked on, if there are any conditions needing to be addressed, and determine what kind of massage is appropriate for you.

What is included in the massage experience?

A massage experience consists of a time to communicate with me to make your massage truly customized, hands-on massage time, time for you to dress and undress and home care suggestions. All of this is done to ensure each and every massage session you receive meets and exceeds your expectations.

How early should I arrive for my massage?

New clients should arrive 10 minutes prior to their massage to fill out paperwork. Returning clients should arrive 5 minutes prior to their session.

Which massage is right for me?

That will be determined during your intake process. I am trained in several different types of modalities and usually use techniques from each modality to offer you the most integrative work.

Do I have to be completely undressed?

You should undress to your level of comfort. About half of my clients prefer to be completely undressed, while the other half prefers to keep their undergarments on. You will undress and dress in the privacy of your massage room and will be securely covered by a blanket and a sheet during your massage session.

Do I have to cover myself with a sheet or towel?

Yes! You will be properly covered (draped) at all times to keep you warm and comfortable. Only the area being worked on will be exposed. No areas will be exposed or worked on without your consent.

What do I do during a massage treatment?

Make yourself comfortable. Many people close their eyes and relax completely during a session; others prefer to talk. It’s up to you. It is your massage, and whatever feels natural to you is the best way to relax.

Can I talk during my session?

Sure. The important thing to remember is that this treatment is all about you relaxing and enjoying the experience. In many instances, people may feel more relaxed starting off talking, and as the massage progresses, enter quiet states of relaxation.

Will the massage hurt?

This depends on the type of massage and the depth of the strokes. A light, relaxing massage that does not probe very deep into the muscles, should not hurt.
Pain can be an indication that the muscle is possibly injured or inflamed and pressure should be adjusted. Also, pain can cause you to tighten up and negate the relaxing effects of the massage. The most effective and deepest massage always works with your body’s natural response, not against it.

How often should I get a massage?

For those who use massage as preventative care or to manage daily stress, one massage every 4-6 weeks is common. Weekly sessions may be needed if you are receiving massage for injury relief or to relieve chronic tightness that is interfering with your daily life. There are many people who incorporate massage therapy at consistent frequency to maintain an optimal state of well-being.

When should I not get a massage?

Generally speaking massage therapy is safe for everyone. There are some condition specific adjustments that need to be made (for example during pregnancy or cancer treatment) to make the session most effective and comfortable.

How many sessions will I need?

Honestly, it’s hard to say. Every person is unique and every condition is unique to each person. It may take one session or it may take several. I will provide you with a treatment plan after your first session once I've had the chance to evaluate your body’s tissues.

How will I feel after my massage treatment?

Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience a significant decrease from long-term aches and pains. Many feel a little slowed down for a short period and then notice an increase of energy, heightened awareness and increased productivity which can last for days.

Am I expected to tip my massage therapist?

I set my rates to meet my needs and do not expect a tip.
